This year will mark the 399th anniversary of Thanksgiving in the United States. But, what lies in wait for us for Thanksgiving this year? Will retailers be able to offer the same phenomenal discounts as in past years? Will shops even be open as usual? What are the impacts of Covid-19 going to be on Thanksgiving shopping 2020?

What Retailers Are Open on Thanksgiving Day?

Some stores open their doors for Black Friday sales as early as one minute past midnight. Some stores even start their Black Friday doorbusters on Thanksgiving Day. Is it worth shopping on Thanksgiving Day? If you can tear yourself away from the turkey, it might be a great way to get your holiday shopping done with fewer shoppers around.

According to Good Housekeeping, these are the stores that we can expect to be open on Thanksgiving this year:

To avoid disappointment, it is advisable to check the opening times of your local store before heading out.

What Grocery Stores Will Be Open on Thanksgiving Day?

Forgot to buy cream cheese for your famous pumpkin pie cheesecake? All out of tinned cranberries? Not to worry. These grocery stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day 2020:

What Retailers Are Closing on Thanksgiving?

Traditionally, some retailers are always closed on Thanksgiving Day. However, this year there will be several more stores that will be keeping their doors closed. Reasons cited include giving their associates a well-earned time off with family, or, as a respect to social distancing requirements. And, another reason: the lack of confidence in consumer spending.

The following stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day 2020:

What Time Does Walmart Open on Thanksgiving Day?

Walmart superstores are so convenient for last-minute Thanksgiving shopping. However, Walmart CEO, John Furner, has stated that the stores will not be open on Thanksgiving Day this year. Because of the challenging times that we have faced this year, the company has decided to keep their stores closed for Thanksgiving 2020. This is so that Walmart associates can spend the day with their families.

Do Black Friday Sales Start on Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving means different things to different people. Getting stuffed on turkey, spending time with family, lazy afternoon naps, football, grandma’s pumpkin pie. For many Americans, the Thanksgiving weekend also signals the start of the Christmas season. If you want to get a head start on your Christmas gift buying, the Thanksgiving weekend could be a good time. Some stores start their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day already. If you want to beat the crowds and work off some of that turkey stuffing, a shopping trip could be just the ticket!

What is a Pre-Black Friday Sale?

Some retailers offer discounts and promotions in the week leading up to Black Friday. These pre-Black Friday sales or “Countdown” Black Friday Sales might not be as discounted as on Black Friday. But if fighting with crowds is not your thing, this could be a great way to get a good discount without getting a black eye!

How is Covid-19 Impacting Thanksgiving?

The Corona Virus pandemic has already made a big impact on consumer spending and shopping habits. With reduced access to shopping malls, there has been a dramatic increase in online shopping. According to Google, in the past few months, 25% of consumers have bought something online instead of at a brick and mortar store. And almost 90% of those consumers said that they were willing to try online shopping again.

With the reduction in foot traffic and the uncertainty of whether they will be allowed to open their doors in the holiday season, retailers are only ordering stock as needed. As yet, department stores have not placed massive orders to stock stores as would normally be the case pre-holiday season. If consumers do have the cash to spend come Thanksgiving Day and stores are open, we might see retailers running out of stock more quickly than in previous years.

Do you love to do your holiday shopping at stores like JC Penney, Sears, and KMart? Best to check that your neighborhood store is even still open at all. According to Business Insider, more than 6300 stores are expected to close in 2020. However, this tally could increase to outstrip the 9300 stores that closed their doors last year. Some estimates expect the number of store closures to be closer to 12 000.

Shopping Thanksgiving Day Sales

Be clever about how you spend your hard-earned cash. Shopping Thanksgiving sales just for the sake of buying items at 50% off is not always the wisest decision. However, buying big-ticket items on a Black Friday sale is a great way to save loads of money on something that you have had your heart set on for the last three months! Consider using a cash back rewards program like Swagbucks to find discounts and save even more money.
